Surprising Animal Behaviors
Which unusual behavior do sea otters exhibit while they are sleeping in the water to ensure they do not drift away from each other?
Correct
Sea otters are basically the champions of holding hands. They sleep in groups called rafts and link paws to keep from drifting off into the deep blue sea while they nap. Anchoring to the sea floor would be a logistical nightmare because the ocean is way too deep. While otters do hang out in kelp forests, they do not have the dental equipment to just bite onto weeds for stability. Finally, secreting sticky mucus sounds like a messy science experiment gone wrong rather than a functional sleeping habit.
